About Elefant Grass
Our founder, Nana, is a British-born Ghanaian woman who grew up in a household that celebrated African art. Her father collected pieces from around the continent through decades of travel. To their family, the value and mastery of this work was never in doubt. Yet, historically, the mainstream narrative of African-produced goods has made them synonymous with being “cheap.” The unfortunate reality of capitalism and colonization has been to undervalue the worth of African-produced goods and undercompensate the producers of those goods.
Today we are witnessing a renaissance in African art and craftsmanship from outside the continent! African fine artists and their incredible creations are thriving in the international art world and we celebrate their recognition.

Elefant Grass has been created to support the work of African artisans. Our goods are meticulously handwoven, and in reverence, of the skill and process required to make these items, we work ethically and sustainably with our artists. This means paying a living wage and providing artists the resources to support working comfortably. Including, the provision of raw materials, the consideration of production time and not just the end product (our large laundry basket can take over a week to make!), and skills development with esteemed masters.

Our long-term aim is to stock a multitude of interior objects made in Africa using indigenous techniques and materials. If there’s a specific product or color you can’t find, please reach out! We’re always happy to make custom orders for our valued clients.
The Team
We work with weavers across the Northern part of Ghana, West Africa. Pictured here is our founder Nana with one of our talented teams in the village of Sumbrungu.
